Reading D4J Joomla Templates tutorial will help you know:

  • How to install a new Joomla Template?
  • How to apply a new Joomla Template for your site?
  • How to apply Joomla modules into Joomla template positions?

1. How to install new Joomla template?

After setting up your Joomla, one of the first things you need to do is to install Joomla template for your site. A Joomla template is usually in the form of a  ***.zip file. You will have new Joomla templates from many different resources. For example, you can download free Joomla Templates or join in  D4J Joomla Templates Club from the website:

After having Joomla Templates, you can login on Joomla administrator area. Then, you install new Joomla template with Installers function by just click on Templates – Sites:

Your Templates –site installing face will display:

As you see, there are two ways to install a new Joomla template via Templates-site installers admin area.

  • The first way - Upload Package File: You can access it by using the Templates-site Installer selection, then finding the Joomla Templates zip file on your local hard drive via the Browse… button:

Choose the Joomla Template and then click on the Upload File & Install button:

  • The second way – Install from directory: If you want, for whatever reason, you may manually unzip the Joomla Template zip file and upload via FTP the resulting templates folder (along with all its contents and structure) to your website folder: {websitestructure}\administrator\components\com_installer\template\

You must make sure that the Install directory field contains {websitestructure}\administrator\components\com_installer\template\... before you click on the Upload File & Install button.

If they’re all completed, properly you could see a screen similar to the one outlined in the following figure:

Click on Continue button to end your installing template.

Note: Installing a Joomla Template does not automatically apply that Joomla Template to your website. It just makes the Joomla Template available for your use. You can install many different templates if you like, and you can even specify a different template to each menu item if you want.

2. How to apply a new Joomla template for your site?

First of all, you need to install Joomla Templates (Please read the tutorial: How to install a new Joomla Template? first). After finishing installation process, you will return to Template Manager face:

To set the new Joomla Template as default on front-end, select your chosen template and click Default button on bar menu in Administrator Template Manager [Site] area:

Note: If you want to modify your new template, use Edit HTML button on bar menu after selecting your new template. Similar that, you will use Edit CSS button to modify the template CSS file. Of course, you need to know about HTML and CSS basic.

It is even possible for the end users to choose the Joomla templates themselves, simply by choosing what you have installed (use the ‘Template Chooser’ module – although this is beyond the scope of this guide).

3. How to apply Joomla modules into Joomla template positions?

To see the Joomla template module positions, typing the follow line in browser address bar: http://{yourjoomlasite}/?tp=1  you will get:

For example, I will guide you to set Banner module into Advert 1 position.
First of all, login into your Joomla administrator area, select Modules Manager -> Site Modules:

Then select the module Banners on the Module Name and click on Edit button on bar menu. You can change Joomla modules fitting the position of your new Joomla template.

Click on Save button on menu bar to finish your work. On the homepage, you see your result:
